Baptisms

Baptism

A joyful beginning to the journey of faith

At St John the Baptist, Wonersh and St Martin’s, Blackheath, we are delighted to welcome families and individuals exploring baptism (also known as christening) or a service of thanksgiving.

Whether this is your first step back into church, or you’ve been part of our community for some time, we would love to walk with you on this meaningful part of the Christian journey.

Baptism is a sign of God's love, a welcome into the family of the Church, and a step of commitment in faith. It’s a moment of celebration, promise, and hope.

 Baptism for Children

Many parents choose to have their baby or child baptised as a way of giving thanks to God and committing to bring them up in the Christian faith. In the service, parents and godparents make promises to help nurture the child in love, prayer, and belief.

We offer baptisms in two settings:

  • At St John’s, Wonersh – during our 10:00am Church Family Service, a welcoming and informal service that’s especially suited to families and children

  • At St Martin’s, Blackheath – during one of our regular Sunday services, which are quieter and more traditional in style

We believe baptism is a joyful welcome into God’s family, so we hold baptisms during our regular Sunday services—when our church family is gathered to celebrate together.

Before the day, we’ll meet with you to talk through the meaning of baptism, what happens during the service, and how we as a church can support your family as your child grows.

Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child

If you’re not ready to make the baptism promises, or simply want to give thanks and pray for your child, we offer a Thanksgiving service as a gentle and joyful alternative. This may also be a first step towards baptism later on.

Thanksgiving services are held:

  • At St John’s during the 10:00am Church Family Service

  • At St Martin’s during a regular Sunday service

Baptism for Adults or Older Children

If you’re a young person or adult who hasn’t been baptised and would like to explore faith, baptism might be your next step.

Adult baptisms usually take place as part of a Confirmation service, where candidates affirm their faith and are prayed for by the Bishop. We’d be happy to guide you through this, whether you’re just beginning to explore or already feel ready.

To learn more, we recommend coming along to a Sunday service or joining one of our courses—a relaxed, friendly space to ask questions and explore Christianity.
