Journeys through Lent
There's lots going on here at Wonersh Church and many different ways to develop in faith over Lent.
Tune in to our Sunday sermons via YouTube, or why not join one of our Lent courses via Zoom?
If that's not your thing we also have a book recommendation for you.
Lent Sermon Series
Our sermon series over lent is taken from an Engage Worship resource entitled 'Worship in the Wilderness'. Our aim is to understand God's heart for us in the wilderness. We will explore stories from across the Bible which will touch on desert experiences. We will unpack wilderness worship practices, such as simplicity, solitude and silence. We will wrestle with the difficult emotions which arise in our desert journeys and we will look to the hope that we have in our 'Man of Sorrows' - Jesus.
If you would like a personal devotion that accompanies this series then do please contact Kia.
Art Conversations with Patsy Kettle
Tuesday Evenings at 7.30pm via Zoom
Would you like to consider something different for Lent this year?
Firstly it will be on Zoom – groan! groan! Secondly it will not be a book or a course to read and think about but paintings to gaze at. The plan is that each Tuesday evening during Lent we will have an introduction to 2 paintings, the first by a classical artist and the second more modern. Each would be done in turn. Having had time to gaze we might then want to share any questions of comments. This would be new ground for me but if you would like to join in the learning curve you would be most welcome!
Take Time Meditations with Kia Pakenham
Wednesday Afternoons at 2pm via Zoom
I’d like to invite you on a journey with me over lent as we explore Jesus last few weeks in a slightly different way using Taketime meditations.
Taketime meditations uses our imagination to provide a calm, comfortable space in which to meet God. Taketime is a Fresh Expression of Church, inspired by Ignatian Spirituality, which has grown out of prison and Church ministry. It enables people, with or without a Church background, to meet with Jesus in their imagination and to find a nondirective and experiential spiritual reality.
This six part Lent course directs us in time and thought through the events of Holy Week leading up to and including Jesus' crucifixion. We will be using Marks gospel to explore the experience with Jesus as he travels this final path.
If this appeals to you I’d love you to join me on Wednesday afternoons at 2pm on zoom and we can travel this road together and maybe encounter this story in a new and powerful way.
Christianity and Climate Change with Jane Boswell
Wednesday Evenings at 7.30pm via Zoom
Would you like to take a closer look at the climate crisis and how Christians are called to respond?
If so, please join me on Thursday evenings during Lent for Christianity and climate change - a six-week series in which we’ll explore what the Bible has to say about this vital topic and how we can respond in prayer and action. Each week, we’ll watch a short film featuring Katharine Hayhoe - an internationally renowned Christian climate scientist - and use these as a basis for discussion. We’ll meet via Zoom from 7:30-8:30pm on Thursdays throughout Lent, starting on Thursday 18 February.
Ruthless Elimination of Hurry
If attending a 'course' isn't your style and you would prefer to observe lent at your own pace then we can wholeheartedly recommend this book.
'The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry' by John Mark Comer, 'How to stay emotionally healthy and spiritually alive in the chaos of the modern world.'
In this current climate a lot of us our re-evaluating our lives; what will the new normal look like? What do I want to leave behind and what changes can I make moving forward? This book may help us to summon the courage to look at our lives and to make those changes. After all, who doesn't want a life lived in all it's fullness?
Emmaus road studied this book last year and have recorded podcasts to help us grasp the concepts within it's pages, and can be accessed here if you feel that would be helpful to you.
And the book is available to purchase online here.
